Govt. to set up 20 new
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalays

The Government has decided to establish 20 new Jawahar
Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) during 2008-09 in 20 districts
having large concentration of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled
Tribes The total estimated requirement of funds on the
establishment of the opening of 20 JNVs is Rs.431.80 crore.
Out of 20 new JNVs, 10 JNVs will be set up in districts having
large concentration of SCs and remaining 10 in the districts
having large concentration of STs.
Navodaya Vidyalayas is a central sector scheme which commenced
in 1986-87 as a follow up to the National Policy on Education,
1986 to provide good quality education to the talented rural
children. The scheme started with 2 experimental schools in
1985-86 and has now grown to 554 schools covering as many
districts in 34 States and UTs. JNVs are residential schools
from class VI to XII. All expenses on boarding and lodging of
students of JNVs as well as expenses on their uniform,
stationery are borne by the Central Government.
